Ivonne Orsini: Snatches success in Spain
Once a shy volleyball player, Ivonne Orsini is making it big in Spain as an actress, super model, spokesperson and television personality. Her face is a familiar one in magazines and on billboards all over the country she now calls home, and her new play, “Cacao Documental,” is a huge success with both the critics and the audience.
Her stellar career away from her native land in one of the most difficult industries of the world, speaks of her perseverance, preparation, charisma and dedication. It all began three years ago, with her participation in a beauty pageant, Miss World Puerto Rico.
The pageant
“The pageant was a turning point in my life,” said the 22-year-old. “It helped me gain confidence, self esteem, maturity and skills that otherwise would have taken me years to learn.”
Beauty pageants have been criticized by many, mostly by self-proclaimed moralists, frustrated competitors or die-hard fans whose favorite candidate never made it to the top three.
“It is a competition,” Orsini noted. “Naturally not everyone is happy at the end.”
Like any other competition, a beauty pageant can only produce one queen. One victor. At the end of the night, only one young woman gets to parade with the flowers, the happy tears and the crown. But pageants can be a lot more. They offer competitors a plethora of opportunities, contacts and access to the right people in a variety of industries. Wise young women know the competition is as close as most will get to show business outside cable television in their living room. And trained savvy candidates know they are competing for much more, not just a crown.
Enter Ivonne Orsini, Miss World Puerto Rico 2008.
Beyond the crown A former athlete and San Juan native, our local beauty queen represented the island in a cut throat Miss World Pageant in South Africa. Although she was one of the 12 semifinalists — there were 120 candidates — she didn’t win the world crown in 2008. She won the Caribbean Queen Title, and she also won the heart and trust of her fellow competitors. So much so, that it was her roommate, Miss Venezuela, who recommended her for the world-famous television series, “Supervivientes” in 2009.
The stunning 5 foot 10 inch blonde attended the casting sessions and won one of the 20 coveted spots to star in the Spanish series, “Supervivientes,” which was watched by almost four million viewers worldwide.Orsini quickly became a favorite with audiences everywhere. She projected herself as a sweet young woman who had the character to accept and win every challenge. She was ready, on and off camera, both mentally and physically.
After the three-month televised reality series, Orsini ended up second runner up and was received in Madrid by thousands of people who greeted her and applauded her skills and triumph.
A star is born
A couple of days after her face was front and center in major dailies and magazines all over Spain and the rest of Europe, Orsini had to shuffle multiple professional opportunities that came her way. She was soon cast as a model, actress, television presenter and spokeswoman for products and firms in Spain. Life was sweet.
But again, tempered the euphoria, realizing her studies came first. She requested a formal transfer from the University of Puerto Rico to Madrid’s Universidad Complutense in order to finish her degree in communications.
Fast forward to 2011. There is no stopping Orsini, who has made Madrid her home and professional headquarters. As she finishes her studies, Orsini has accepted more professional contracts and offers which she has the time to fulfill and enjoy to the fullest.
One of those offers is acting in Juan José Alonso Millán’s “Cacao Documental,” a comedy that premiered this month in Madrid’s La Boite del Pintor Theater on Goya Street. Millán is a highly respected Spanish playwright. The comedy is a seven-sketch musical satire that deals with current issues affecting Spaniards: unemployment, prostitution, sex and love, among other dilemmas. Orsini plays seven characters in the demanding piece, in which she also sings and dances, fulfilling another passion of hers.
The winner takes it all “I have been very blessed,” Orsini said. “It is a perfect opportunity for me…to be part of the theater world in Spain and to be able to do so with one of the best known writers and directors in the country.”
To prepare for the play, Orsini had to work with her voice and master various foreign accents, because she not only sings but interprets women from different nationalities and regions in Spain.
“It has been educational and fun,” she noted. “I have to vocalize perfectly, and also know by heart their vocabulary, their phrases…feel the humor of this fantastic country. I love it.”
Ivonne Orsini is no longer a former beauty queen. She is a Puerto Rican making it in one of the toughest industries of the world, show business. In one of the most competitive arenas, Madrid!
“I have been patient and things are happening for me here. I am very grateful to everyone in Spain, said Orsini. “This is my home. I am living my dream.”
